Nne — My Mother

The song is a classic— “My Mother My Mother”— sung from the perspective a young woman who’s gone out on her own to the river. The pot that she’s uses to gather water has inexplicably broken. The question she sings, contained in the final lines of the song, is posed to her mother: should she remain with the pot or abandon the broken pieces and come home?

The team integrated a traditional Igbo song workshop into the Independence Day Open mic at Palabras Bookstore in Phoenix, Arizona. The song was taught in three parts, with audience participation.
